Re-modeling Chalandri’s Stream.

“Re – modeling Chalandri’s Stream” was the title of Module’s I final presentation at MAS LA ETHz. Module’s aim was to start getting familiar with the basics of Rhino 3d, RhinoCAM and their extensions and applications on the CNC milling. I selected to use – apply those new tools on my undergraduate final thesis – Chalandri’s stream.

Using those tools in the first couple of exercises, in order to understand how they work and their results, I found most interesting the speed of creating models with high precision. The above mentioned, can start to change the way you negotiate with landscape. You can create pretty fast the general topography of your work and then to start experimenting with your design, losing no time in creating models. It works as a tool of having pretty fast results of your design because you create the model, then you can check the way the design interacts with the general topography and this leads you in evaluating your design. If not satisfied with the result, you can re-mill your design and re-check. So this works vise-versa. From drawing board quickly to create a test model and from the test model again back to drawing board.

For my model, I chose to play with texturing and the freedom of re-milling my project. This adds a layer that is not easily applied when it comes to analogue media. I had to deal with the water clock I designed for my undergraduate final thesis that was being activated on different areas separately or at the same time. With the analogue way I could only achieve that with several and a big number of models that might take over a month to finalize. Using the CNC milling it helped me to model a bigger area (and a scale not easily worked by hand) of my whole project, without now thinking the time I will have to spend only in creating just the topography, which would lack in precision. Using the milling machine helped me to repeat the general topography three times in a small amount of time. Then I could play with different materials and different textures. A simple process where I didn’t have to design anything – I just had to try different commands in RhinoCAM, in order to get the desired result. Applying color and then re-milling my model, gave me the opportunity to outline easily with just a milling job the areas and parts I wanted – when and where exactly the water appears. Having those 3 stills during the day it really gives a general idea how my design would affect the overall of stream’s picture during the day. I didn’t have that opportunity before. This part was only described in words and some plans.

Chalandri’s stream seems to be a lifetime project for me. Due to continuation of my studies at the ETH Zurich (MAS LA), I think it should be better if this blog goes english-talking – this is why the changes you will see in the next days, will happen.
